MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (7-1, 3-1), ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division II, bounced back from its first setback of the year three days ago to down Chowan (3-4, 3-2), 66-50, Tuesday evening in a Conference Carolinas game at the Hawks Athletic Center and Bob Burke Court.
Barton senior center
Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all scorers with 19 points while sophomore guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 18 points and hit four treys as the Bulldogs raced to a 29-6 lead midway through the second quarter and held off a late Hawks' rally to claim the victory in their first road league game of the year.
Chowan, which was led by Destiny Robinson (Hampton, Va.) with 12 points, cut the margin to 10 points early in the fourth quarter on three occasions but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way. Robinson was the lone Hawks' player to score in double figures.
The Hawks lost despite holding a 51-34 advantage on the boards but turned the ball over 20 times and shot just 28 percent (19-of-68) from the floor. The Bulldogs also connected on 18-of-21 free throw attempts (86 percent) and improved to 4-0 away from Wilson Gymnasium this season.
Barton next hosts Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday, December 18, at 2:00 p.m., inside Wilson Gymnasium while Chowan hosts Francis Marion next Wednesday, December 15, in a league game beginning at 2:00 p.m.
