Barton women’s soccer outlasted by North Greenville on penalty kicks to end season

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Barton College women's soccer team (9-5-4) saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion as North Greenville (11-3-5) prevailed in a penalty kick shootout, 5-3, Saturday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the 2021 Conference Carolinas Championship at Pepsi Stadium.

The match officially ended in a 3-3 tie.  The Bulldogs were the sixth seed in the tournament while the Crusaders were seeded third.

North Greenville moves on to play second-seeded UNC Pembroke (13-4) in the semifinals next Friday, November 12, at 7:00 p.m., at the Florence Soccer Complex in Florence, S.C.

Barton forced overtime when senior forward Olivia Bronson (Gaithersburg, Md.) found the back of the net at the 81:16 mark of the second half.  Bronson also added a pair of assists on the Bulldogs' first two scores as the visitors rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first half to force the match to extra sessions.

Barton also received goals from sophomore forward Lexis Goldberg (Sanford, N.C.) and freshman forward Hannah Johnson (Oneonta, N.Y.) while junior Rachel Cox (Wilson, N.C.) stopped five shots in goal as the Bulldogs went unbeaten (3-0-3) in their past six matches.

For North Greenville, Molly Platt (Harrisburg, Pa.) scored on a penalty kick to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead just before halftime but the Crusaders were kept off the board the rest of the way.  North Greenville also held an 18-14 edge in shots taken while goalkeeper Lizzy Luzzi (King, N.C.) made three saves for the home team.
