Barton women’s basketball rolls in 2021-22 home opener, 84-55 over Shaw

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (3-0) opened the 2021-22 home portion of its schedule with a dominant, 84-55 win over Shaw (0-3) Wednesday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.

Barton sophomore guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior All-American center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) both finished with 18 points on the night as the Bulldogs raced to a 29-9 advantage after one quarter of play and never looked back in the win.

Walker scored 14 points and hit four treys before intermission as the Bulldogs built a 50-27 halftime advantage.  Senior center Jami Tham (Arlington, Va.) added 15 points and 16 rebounds as Barton forced Shaw into 28 turnovers which led to 32 points in the victory as well.

Shaw was led by Cherelle Washington (Cape Coral, Fla.) with 11 points but the Bears scored just four points in the third stanza as any attempt of a comeback was erased quickly.

Barton led by as many as 34 points in the third quarter – 61-27 with 1:38 left – and connected on nine treys including three by junior guard Kayla Byrne (Mount Prospect, Ill.), who came off the bench for nine points.

Barton hits the road to take on Fayetteville State next Tuesday, November 23, beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Shaw takes on Virginia-Lynchburg on Friday at 5:00 p.m., in the Raleigh Classic on the campus of Saint Augustine's University.
