WILSON, N.C. – The Barton football team (4-3) scored the biggest win of its young existence with a 26-20 overtime stunner over eighth-ranked and previously unbeaten Wingate (5-1) Saturday night at Electric Supply Company Field and Truist Stadium.
Barton redshirt freshman running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.), the leading rusher in NCAA Division II, scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime from nine yards out as the home team shook off some early rust to pull off the stunning upset.
Terrell finished the night with 174 yards on the ground and scored all three of the Bulldogs' touchdowns in the win. Terrell, who now has 1,245 yards rushing for a 177.9-yard average on the year, added a 75-yard touchdown run in the third quarter as the team's offense opened up in the second half.
Wingate's McLean Robertson (Lexington, S.C.) forced overtime with a 54-yard field goal with 1:04 left before Barton had a field goal blocked as time expired in the fourth quarter.
Barton redshirt freshman quarterback
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added 144 yards through the air and 58 yards on the ground while redshirt freshman linebacker
Shane Perry (Holly Springs, N.C.) and redshirt freshman defensive back
Kendarius Jenkins (Tarboro, N.C.) totaled 14 and 12 tackles, respectively, in the win. The Bulldogs' defense also picked off two passes and recovered a fumble in the win.
Wingate's Kalen Clark (Charlotte, N.C.) rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown while Shaw Crocker passed for 142 yards and a score despite the loss. Barton avenged a 55-14 defeat to Wingate last Saturday, March 13, 2021, in an abbreviated spring schedule.
