CONCORD, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's cross country teams competed Friday afternoon at the Spring 2021 Conference Carolinas Cross Country Championships at Frank Liske Park. The meet is the lone one on the season for the Bulldogs as the league championships were shifted to the spring due to the pandemic. Both races were five kilometers.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs took eighth place overall while Emmanuel (Ga.) took home team honors. Barton freshman
Damien Gonzalez (Mooresville, N.C.) led the way with third-team all-league accolades after placing 19th overall with a time of 17:22. Mount Olive's Cas Kopmels (Leiden, NETHERLANDS) won the race after crossing the finish line in 15:32.
In the women's competition, Barton junior
Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.) was the top competitor for the Bulldogs as she finished 11th overall in 21:07 and garnered all-league second-team accolades. Emmanuel (Ga.) won on the women's side as well while Erskine's Lizzie Naval (Summerville, S.C.) took home individual honors with a time of 19:58.
