Barton women’s basketball rolls in home opener, 88-60 over Lees-McRae

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's basketball team (3-1, 3-1) opened the home portion of its abbreviated 2020-21 schedule with a rousing, 88-60 victory over Lees-McRae (3-1, 3-1) Friday evening in a Conference Carolinas contest at Wilson Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs were led by junior forward Jami Tham-Morrobel (Arlington, Va.) with a double-double – 18 points and 11 rebounds – while junior guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) added 14 points as Barton raced to a 29-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Barton freshman guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 11 points as well for the Bulldogs, who led by as many as 37 points – 78-41 with just under seven minutes left in the contest – and knocked Lees-McRae from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Lees-McRae's Destiny Johnson (Iron Station, N.C.) finished with 18 points to lead the visitors but the Bobcats shot just 38 percent (26-of-68) from the field and turned the ball over 21 times.  Senior center All-American Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) added nine points and is now tied for 10th all-time in scoring for the Bulldogs with 1,102 points.

The two teams will play again on Saturday at Wilson Gymnasium beginning at 2:00 p.m.
