Box Score WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team (4-3, 1-0) opened Conference Carolinas play with a 3-0 sweep of Southern Wesleyan (1-9, 0-1) Friday evening at Beddingfield High School.
The Bulldogs won by scores of 26-24, 27-25 and 25-18 and scored the final nine points in the first set to rally for the improbable victory while running their winning streak to three matches.
Barton junior outside hitter Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.) finished with a match-high 23 kills in addition to 12 digs while freshman outside hitter Allison Gambill (Hickory, N.C.) added a double-double – 14 kills and 11 digs - in the triumph. Elkins leads the league in kills per set (4.64).
Southern Wesleyan's Darby Sheets (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) totaled seven kills and seven digs but the Warriors couldn't overcome the first-set defeat. Barton also held a 54-28 edge in total kills and tallied eight service aces in the win.
Barton next hosts North Greenville at James B. Hunt High School while Southern Wesleyan faces Chowan in Murfreesboro, N.C. Both league contests are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
