Barton men's soccer falls to Belmont Abbey, 3-1, on the road in the conference opener

BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (2-1, 0-1) suffered its first loss of the year, 3-1 to Belmont Abbey (1-2, 1-0), Saturday afternoon in the Conference Carolinas opener at Alumni Field.

After Barton junior forward Ruben Mancio (Cadiz, SPAIN) opened the scoring in the 28th minute, Belmont Abbey responded with three straight goals.  The Crusaders' Gianni Serio (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) assisted on all three scores.

Belmont Abbey's Sander Herlofsen (Kristiansand, NORWAY) tied the contest at the 34:03 mark before Albin Baathe (Lund, SWEDEN) found the back to the net for the match-winner in the 70th minute.  Belmont Abbey held an 18-7 advantage in shots taken while Ben Knust (Omaha, Neb.) earned the win in goal for the Crusaders after stopping two shots

Barton freshman goalkeeper Jacob Randolph (Metairie, La.) suffered the loss despite six saves.  The Crusaders' defense also held the Bulldogs without a shot taken in the second half.

Barton returns home to take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday night beginning at 7:00 p.m., at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex while Belmont Abbey travels to Florence, S.C., to face Francis Marion on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
