Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team (1-3) split its two matches Friday at the 2019 USC Aiken Invitational at the Convocation Center, defeating Shorter by a 3-2 score before falling to Auburn Montgomery, 3-0, in the nightcap.
Barton 3, Shorter 2
The Bulldogs defeated the Hawks by scores of 22-25, 25-11, 23-25, 26-24 and 15-11 and rallied from a 2-1 deficit for their first win of the year.
Barton junior outside hitter Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.), a 2018 first-team all-league and all-region honoree, led the way with a match-high 27 kills in addition to 15 digs while freshman outside hitter Allison Gambill (Hickory, N.C.) added 18 kills and 13 digs in the triumph.
Elkins, who hit the 1,000-kill mark for her career in her last contest, hit .308 for the match while sophomore setter Sarah Kirk (Pearland, Texas) added 28 assists and 15 digs in the win. Shorter's Mirella Gatterdam (Pensacola, Fla.) finished with 12 kills but the Hawks (3-2) hit just .103 for the match.
Auburn Montgomery 3, Barton 0
The Warhawks (5-3) made it four victories in a row with a sweep of the Bulldogs by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-20.
AUM was led by Sommer Rhea (Oregon, Ill.) and Ariadne Borges (Campinas, BRAZIL) with 11 kills each while Isadora Nicolai (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) added 28 assists in the victory. Barton was led by Gambrill with 12 kills and Elkins added a double-double – 11 kills and 10 digs – in the losing effort. Elkins has a team-leading 69 kills on the season.
Barton hosts Elizabeth City State in its home opener on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., at Ralph L. Fike High School.
