FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Laisy Scardazzi recorded her first two goals of the season on Tuesday night as the Barton College women's soccer team tallied its second-straight shutout with a 4-0 victory over Methodist University.
Barton (2-0) tallied six shots in the opening half of action and followed with eight more to close out the contest. Junior goalkeeper Megan Bolick and freshman netminder Kristin Davis combined to record the shutout with Davis playing the final 16:54 of the contest. Methodist (2-1) took a total of 11 shots in the contest but were only able to get three on frame against BC.
Scardazzi paced the Bulldogs in the contest with her pair of goals, while senior Jordyn Brown and sophomore Syaani Harris each tallied a goal for BC. Freshman Brenna Keegan added her first assist of the season on the second goal of the night for Scardazzi in the second-half. Junior Rebekah Beal recorded a match-high five shots in the contest, with one ringing off the crossbar.
Gillian Niesel recorded a pair of shots on goal for Methodist, while Alexa Smith delivered the other shot on frame for the Monarchs. Niesel and Smith tallied three shots apiece for Methodist as five other players recorded one shot.
Freshman Caitlynn Bragg would give Barton the first look at getting onto the scoreboard at the 15:25 mark as her attempt would be denied by Methodist starting goalkeeper Maggie Hunt. Bolick faced her first attempt by the Monarchs in the 25th minute as Niesel tried to beat Salisbury, N.C. native.
Barton tallied the first goal of the contest at the 42-minute mark as Scardazzi beat Hunt from the far-right side of the field. The tally would be the only one of the first half as BC held a 6-3 advantage in shots.
Beal had an attempt denied in the 49th minute by the Monarchs, who blocked the opportunity for the Bulldogs to try and double their lead. Barton would eventually increase its lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute as Harris beat the netminder in the upper left corner after seeing her shot just minutes earlier miss wide.
The Bulldogs would score on each of there next two shots as Scardazzi tallied her second of the contest off a feed from Keegan that found the bottom left corner of the goal at the 70:18 mark. Brown then upped the lead to 4-0 for BC in the 74th minute as she tallied her first goal of the season, leading to a goalie change for the Monarchs.
Davis made a pair of saves in net for Barton after taking over for Bolick. Her first test came off a shot from Smith in the 85th minute and the second in the 88th minute off the foot of Niesel.
Bolick (2-0) earned her second straight win after stopping the only shot on net that she faced for BC, while Davis followed suit in stopping both shots that came her way. Hunt (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season after allowing four goals and making one stop. Catie Gaughan played the final 11:14 in net for the Monarchs without facing a shot on net.
Barton heads to Salisbury, N.C. to take part in the Catawba Classic on Friday against Catawba College at 7 p.m. and on Sunday against Mars Hill University at 1 p.m.
