GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (10-6-2) saw its season come to an end with a penalty-kick setback to Belmont Abbey (13-3-1), 3-1, in the 2018 Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship semifinals Friday evening at Saints Field. The contest ended in a one-all tie after 110 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs were seeded seventh in the tournament while the Crusaders were the third seed. Belmont Abbey will take on top-seeded and No. 20 Limestone (16-2), the host school, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., in the championship. Limestone beat Chowan by a 1-0 score in its semifinal match.
Belmont Abbey's Morgan Patton (Jacksonville, Fla.) opened the scoring at the 17:03 mark before junior forward and all-league honoree Rebekah Beal (Nashville, N.C.) tied the contest with a penalty kick – her third goal of the year – in the 71st minute.
Belmont Abbey held a 15-10 advantage in shots taken while Lauryn Harding (Fayetteville, N.C.) stopped four shots in earning the victory in goal for the Crusaders. Barton junior goalkeeper Megan Bolick (Salisbury, N.C.) suffered the loss despite making eight saves.
Barton played its seventh overtime contest of the season and finished with year without a loss in its final five contests (4-0-1).
