DUE WEST, S.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (7-2-1, 4-1-1) scored with two seconds left in overtime to down Erskine (2-7-1, 1-5-1), 2-1, in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday afternoon at Huggins Field. The victory kept the Bulldogs in contention for the league regular season title.
Sophomore forward Ruben Mancio (Cadiz, SPAIN) scored his team-leading ninth goal of the year at the 99:58 mark of the first overtime for the Bulldogs. Barton freshman Julius Stefansson, a defender from Kopavogur, ICELAND, was credited with the assist.
Luis Hernandez Velasco (Guadarrama, SPAIN), a freshman forward, opened the scoring with his first goal of the year just 15:47 into the match. Velasco was led by senior midfielder Tolly Beatson (London, ENGLAND), who was credited with the assist.
Erskine tied the score in the 78th minute on a goal by Ryan De Leon (Frisco, Texas) before Barton prevailed in the extra frame. Barton held a 15-10 advantage in shots taken while junior Francisco Noguera (Santiago, CHILE) earned the win in goal after making three saves. Erskine's goalkeeper, Alex Pico (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), suffered the loss despite stopping five shots.
Barton has a quick turnaround and will face Chowan on Monday night at 7:00 p.m., at home in a Conference Carolinas match. Erskine, meanwhile, plays Anderson in Anderson, S.C., on Tuesday starting at 7:00 p.m.
