Barton women's soccer blanks Shaw, 3-0, for first victory of new season

WILSON, N.C. – Junior transfer Jordyn Brown provided two goals and an assist, and sophomore transfer Rebekah Beal chipped in a goal and assist as the Barton College women's soccer team downed Shaw University, 3-0, Wednesday evening at soggy Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.

Brown put the Lady Bulldogs (1-2) on the board in the 14th minute when she put away a loose ball that had been knocked down by Shaw keeper Shianna Duplantis.

The Logan, Utah, resident added her second goal of the night and third of the season in the 72nd minute when she finished off a pass into the box from Beal.

In-between those two goals, Beal collected her first goal as a Lady Bulldog in the 40th minute on a header off a pass from Brown along the right goal line.

Barton enjoyed a 20-6 edge in total shots and 7-2 advantage in corner kicks against the Lady Bears, who are competing in their first season as an intercollegiate program.

Shaw (0-2) had a its best opportunity to score in the 58th minute when Jacari Riggins and Leslie Mendoza fired back-to-back open shots from close range, but Barton senior keeper Haley Sauls knocked down Riggins' shot from the left wing and caught Mendoza's follow-up from inside the box.

Sauls, who lives in Shaw's hometown of Raleigh, N.C., recorded four total saves in posting her first shutout of the year.

The Lady Bulldogs will open Conference Carolinas play this weekend when they travel to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae College in a 1:30 p.m. start.
