WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's volleyball team recorded its fourth straight victory Friday night by sweeping North Greenville University, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20, in Conference Carolinas play at Wilson Gymnasium.
The last three of those wins for the Lady Bulldogs (7-6, 3-0) have come in league play, where BC maintained a share of the North Division lead. With the loss, North Greenville dropped to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Freshman Kaytlin Elkins led Barton with 14 kills and added eight digs. Senior Miranda Miller chipped in nine kills, and junior Haley Headley contributed eight.
Junior Angelica Acevedo produced a double-double of 22 assists and 15 digs, and also joined junior Allie Cullens in delivering a team-high five blocks. Two other BC players collected 15 digs, freshman Ashley Owen and junior Riley Bane.
The Crusaders were paced by senior Samantha Hebb's 10 kills.
Barton jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead in set one. Consecutive kills by Hebb sparked a North Greenville run to within three at 12-9, but the Lady Bulldogs used an NGU error, a kill by Headley and a service ace by Elkins to pull comfortably back in front by six.
The Lady Bulldogs again pulled out to a five-point cushion in the second set and held it through 11-6, but North Greenville rallied to take the lead 13-12 on a Kenzie Pierce service ace.
Tied at 15-all, the Crusaders used consecutive kills by Emma Pepper and Hebbs to take a 17-15 advantage and force a Barton timeout, but three straight kills by Elkins, Miller and Courtney Wiseman put BC back in front.
Barton went up 21-19 before NGU fought back again to tie the set at 22-all on a BC error. However, kills by Cullens and Wiseman, followed by a Crusader error, gave the Lady Bulldogs three straight points and the set.
The Lady Bulldogs roared out to a quick 13-4 lead in the third frame, but North Greenville stormed back once more, winning nine straight points to tie the set at 13-all.
The Crusaders took the lead at 14-13 following a Barton error and held it as late as 16-15 after an Annie Beisecker kill, but kills by Cullens and Elkins put BC back in front, 17-16. Two more kills by Elkins helped Barton pull away to a 20-16 cushion, but NGU fought back once more to within one at 20-19 before the Lady Bulldogs rolled off three straight points to finally pull away towards the match win.
Barton returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Southern Wesleyan University in a 2 p.m. match.
