DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Barton College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Oklahoma Baptist University and a 3-1 setback to Barry University Friday on day one of the Bahama House Classic, which was hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Senior Miranda Miller produced 19 kills and 16 digs in the two contests to pace the Lady Bulldogs (0-2). Freshman Kaytlin Elkins added 17 kills in her first collegiate matches, and junior Allie Cullens chipped in 12. Redshirt junior Riley Bane collected 30 digs over the two contests, while junior Angelica Acevedo pushed up 55 assists.
Oklahoma Baptist 3, Barton 0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-17)
All three sets against the Bison were close, and Barton nearly pulled off a big rally in set one. Trailing 20-15 and 23-20, BC used three kills by Elkins in mounting a comeback. The Lady Bulldogs held a set point at 25-24 after an OBU attack error, but a kill by the Bison's Nicole Fleitman tied the match again.
Barton erased a four-point deficit in set two and was tied as late as 17-all after a kill by Miller, but Oklahoma Baptist won five of the last six points in the set, four on kills.
Trailing again by four points midway through the third frame, Barton actually regained the lead this time at 15-14 on a kill by Miller. However, after an OBU timeout, the Bison rolled off the next six points in a row to pull away.
BC was competitive in the contest despite hitting just .025 for the match.
Elkins had a team-high 10 kills, while Miller added eight kills and a career-high 11 digs. Bane produced a team-high 16 digs, and Cullens contributed five block assists while also hitting .368 on offense.
Barry 3, Barton 1 (25-22, 11-25, 25-13, 25-23)
The match started and ended with tight sets. In-between, the two sides took turns dominating frames two and three.
Barry appeared on its way to a blowout win in set one as well after racing out to leads of 7-1 and 12-2. However, two kills each by Elkins and Haley Headley sparked a 7-0 run for the Lay Bulldogs. The Buccaneers pushed their advantage back to seven in reaching set point at 24-17, but Barton won five straight points and forced a Barry timeout before committing an attack error to end the frame.
Barton produced its best set of the day by far in the second frame, hitting .345 as a team. Cullens delivered four kills in the set, and Miller collected three of her career-high 11 in the blowout. BC also produced four service aces in the frame, three by freshman Ashley Owen.
The Buccaneers exacted their revenge in set three, hitting .391 in dominating the frame. Barton managed just three kills in the entire set with 11 attack errors, a negative .258 percentage.
Set four featured eight ties in the early going before the Lady Bulldogs opened up a four-point advantage at 13-9. Senior Courtney Wiseman had consecutive block assists during the 4-0 run and Bane added a service ace.
The BC lead grew to five at 15-10 after a block by Headley and Wiseman and remained at that margin through 16-11. However, three straight attack errors by Barton gave Barry momentum, and the Buccaneers eventually tied the match again at 17-all.
From there, the two sides traded points all the way to 23-all before consecutive kills by Barry's Genesis Castillo ended the set and the match.
Headley matched a career-high with seven kills in the contest for BC, and Elkins added seven as well. Bane collected 14 digs, and Acevedo produced a double-double of 31 assists and 11 digs.
Barton will wrap up play in the tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs will face Lynn University at 10 a.m., and will finish the weekend with a contest against host Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m.
