HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College scored three goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half, turning a close affair against Barton College into a 5-0 non-conference rout Wednesday night at Coker Athletic Field.
Behind five first-half saves from keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik, the Bulldogs (5-11-1) kept the Cobras off the board for the first 43 minutes. However, with just over a minute to go before halftime, Coker's Aladdin Elfares managed to slip between two BC defenders along the left endline and fire a pass to Jacob Simonis, who scored inside the near post to put the Cobras on the board.
Coker (4-8-1) struck again just over a minute into the second half. Elfares appeared to be making a pass from right to left across the box, but the ball bounced off the leg of a Barton defender as he tried to intercept the pass and redirected into the net.
The Cobras put the match away with goals on consecutive shots just 25 seconds apart in the 62nd minute, both off assists from Elfares. The first came on a score by Cameron McDonald after a long lob pass from the Barton half and then a pass from the right side by Elfares. The second one was started by a Barton turnover at midfield, leading to a run down the left wing and the shot by Joao Silva.
Coker tacked on a final score with less than three minutes to play, making it the most goals allowed by Barton this season.
Barton was limited to just five shots on goal and two on frame. Tolly Beatson dribbled himself open for a shot at the top of the box with seven minutes left in the first half, and Ruben Mancio had an opportunity on a chip from 25 yards out in the 68th minute, but both were saved by Coker keeper Justin Walker.
The contest marked the final road trip of the year for the Bulldogs. Barton will close out its 2017 season on Saturday when it hosts King University in a 2 p.m. Homecoming match.
