MURFREESBORO, N.C. – A goal from junior Laisy Scardazzi with under a minute remaining in the first half wouldn't be enough for the Lady Bulldogs as the Barton College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Chowan University on Wednesday in Conference Carolinas action.

Scardazzi, who scored her fifth goal of the season for Barton in the 45th minute, gave the Lady Bulldogs (4-5-3, 3-2-3) a 1-0 lead over the Hawks (7-1-2, 5-1-1) on a header that came off a free kick. Sophomore Laura Franco was credited with her second assist of the season after playing the ball to the middle of the box, where she found Scardazzi for the eventual tally.

Senior goalkeeper Haley Sauls was tasked with making a pair of saves in net for the Lady Bulldogs in the opening half. Chowan's Carolina Lucci recorded one of the two shots for the Hawks, coming in the 16th minute.

Barton would get four shots on frame against Chowan goalkeeper Olivia Borer with the Hawks net-minder notching three saves.

Chowan controlled the pace of play in the second half, peppering Sauls with six shots on net. Sauls kept her team in front 1-0, until Rebekah Langley converted a penalty kick opportunity in the 71st minute for the Hawks.

Both teams looked for the go-ahead tally with time winding down in the contest as BC senior Nikki Helton's attempt in the 85th minute was denied by Borer. Lucci found herself with a pair of golden opportunities to end the contest for the Hawks, only to be stopped by Sauls on two separate occasions, with the last coming in the 90th minute.

In the first overtime, Sauls was tested less than a minute into play as Mackenzie Imamura rocketed a shot on net with Sauls turning away the opportunity. That would be the only shot on goal recorded in the overtime, sending the contest to a second overtime.

Lucci would score the golden-goal for the Hawks on what would be her seventh shot on goal in the 104th minute on a breakaway after getting behind the Lady Bulldogs' defense. The score was Lucci's team-leading 13th of the season.

Sauls finished the contest with eight saves for BC, while Borer recorded six saves for the Hawks.

Chowan held a 17-9 advantage in shots and 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks also favored Chowan in the contest, 5-3.

The Lady Bulldogs host Conference Carolinas opponent Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. matchup.
