FLORENCE, S.C. – After losing its first match of the day, the Barton College women's volleyball team rebounded to defeat Newberry College in its second match of the FMU Invitational Tournament on Friday on the campus of Francis Marion University.

Francis Marion 3, Barton 1 (25-16, 22-25, 27-25, 25-22)

The Patriots were in control of the first set early on, building a lead of 7-3 following a stretch of six unanswered points. Francis Marion's lead grew as large a margin as 10 points at 23-13 before closing the set with back-to-back kills by Lenee Bolt and Carolina Boone.

Francis Marion carried the momentum into the second set of action, once again building 7-3 lead. However, the Lady Bulldogs chipped away at the FMU lead for the rest of the set, tying the score at 23-23 and eventually taking the win with a service ace from sophomore Hayley Marshburn.

In the third set, Barton was the team to carry over momentum as BC led 6-1 following five unanswered points. The lead grew to 12-4 for the Lady Bulldogs after a Francis Marion attack error. BC looked to put the game away after leading 24-18 late in the set, but the Patriots went on to tie the set and take a 27-25 win on a Barton attack error.

Despite being in control early on in the fourth set of play, Barton fell victim to a 6-0 run by FMU leading to an eventual three-point win for the host team to close out the match.

Marshburn led the team with 17 kills, 12 digs and three service aces, followed by 13 digs and four total blocks from freshman Kelsey Riquelme. Senior Mariana Kedzia chipped in with nine kills and a career-high 21 digs, while sophomore Angleica Acevedo recorded 45 assists and 19 digs. Redshirt-sophomore libero Riley Bane turned in 21 digs on defense.

Barton 3, Newberry 0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-20)

Barton's first win of the 2016 came in the second match of the day in the team's first ever contest against Newberry College. BC defeated the Wolves in straight sets to break a six-game losing streak to begin the year.

The Lady Bulldog defense held Newberry to a -.040 hitting percentage in the first set to claim a 25-16 victory. BC lead early on in the second set of action with a 12-11 advantage. The two sides continue to remain within striking distance of one another until a Newberry attack error and a kille from Bane gave Barton the 2-0 match edge.

The Royal Blue and White took an early lead in the third set and ended the match with a kill from senior Kaitlyn Micol to secure the team's first win of the year.

Marshburn led all players with 15 kills to go along with a .289 hitting percentage and 11 digs, while Kedzia had 12 kills of her own. Bane finished with a match-high 17 digs as Acevedo turned in her fifth double-double of the year with 34 assists and 10 digs.

Barton concludes the FMU Invitational Tournament with consecutive matches against UNC Pembroke and Anderson University.
