GERMANTOWN, Md. – Four different players scored a goal, including two from the foot of senior forward Alex David, as the Barton College men's soccer team earned a 5-1 victory over Holy Family University on the final day of the UDC Invitational.
Junior Tyler Dew got the scoring started for the Bulldogs with his second goal in as many games, finishing a ball played into the box from sophomore Tolly Beatson in the 23rd minute of action.
Beatson put BC up by two with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute before junior Danny Peru put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0 with a goal roughly six minutes later. Peru was able to corral a long punt by keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik that bounced over a Holy Family defender leading to Barton's 3-0 halftime lead.
Holy Family defender John Steward headed in a corner kick from midfielder Justin Hiltwine to put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the 51st minute but the Barton lead would prove too much to overcome.
David, a Raleigh, N.C. resident, scored his first goal of the match in the 61st minute after receiving a through ball from Peru and beating a defender on a breakaway and placing the ball past the HFU keeper. David's second goal came 11 minutes later after fellow senior Craig Edwards chipped a pass over the defense, leading to Barton's fifth goal of the day.
Barton outshot Holy Family 20-16 in the match, including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. Hordvik was credited with the win for the Bulldogs after registering two saves in 62:23 minutes of action, while sophomore keeper Jacob Baird played the final 27:37 of the match and totaled four saves in his first career appearance in goal.
The Bulldogs return home on Wednesday, Sept. 7 to host Peach Belt Conference member Francis Marion University at 7 p.m. at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex in Wilson.
