GERMANTOWN, Md. – A goal by junior defender Tyler Dew with 32 seconds remaining forced an overtime period, but the Barton College men's soccer team fell 3-2 at the hands of American International College on the first day of the UDC Invitational at the Maryland Soccerplex.
The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets played to a scoreless tie at the halftime intermission with AIC holding a 10-5 advantage in total shots. American International held a 23-18 edge in shots at the end of the game with BC putting 10 total shots on goal compared to nine by the opposition.
American International was able to get on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 47th minute of action followed by a second goal in the 57th minute to build a 2-0 lead midway through the second half.
However, the Bulldogs looked to mount a comeback beginning with a penalty kick from senior forward Rodrigo Neves in the 78th minute. After back-to-back AIC fouls in the box, Neves stepped to the line and buried his first goal of the season to bring BC within one goal of a tie.
As the clock wound down, sophomore midfielder Tolly Beatson sent a corner kick into the box that was finished with the head of Dew to tie the match at 2-2 and send the two teams into extra time. Yellow Jacket forward Sam Jepson finished a shot from 20 yards out in the 97th minute to give his team the win and end the match.
Junior goalkeeper Jens Madsen Hordvik recorded six saves in the loss with playing all 96:17 minutes of action.
Barton will have a day off before taking on Holy Family University at Noon on Sunday, Sept. 4 in the final day of the UDC Invitational.
