WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team totaled 57 digs and six blocks, leading to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) win over Emmanuel College to open Conference Carolinas play on Friday evening in Wilson Gymnasium.
Sophomore Hayley Marshburn was the only Lady Bulldog to finish with double-digit kills, registering a match-high 12 in the contest. The Henderson, N.C. native also had 13 digs to tally her sixth double-double of the season to lead Barton to its fourth straight victory.
Seniors Kaitlyn Micol and Mariana Kedzia finished with nine and seven kills, respectively, while sophomore Angelica Acevedo led all players with 28 assists to go along with 12 digs and four service aces. Redshirt-sophomore libero Riley Bane totaled at match-high 14 digs in the victory.
Barton started the match strong with five unanswered points and led 13-5 early on in the first set. The visiting Lions used a 6-1 run late in the set to take a 20-18 lead before the Lady Bulldogs went on a 7-1 run to end the frame.
After falling behind by three points early in the second set, a 7-1 run helped BC regain the lead. Barton held the advantage until midway through the set as Emmanuel tied the match at 16-16 and went ahead by one point following a Barton attack error. However, the Royal Blue and White ended the set on a 5-1 run to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Lions rebounded to lead 3-0 to open the third set, however, Barton was able to battle back and eventually take a 16-14 lead following a kill from sophomore Allie Cullens. The Lady Bulldogs held on to the lead throughout the rest of the period, closing the set with five unanswered points.
Barton will return to action tomorrow with its second consecutive Conference Carolinas tilt when Erskine College comes to Wilson for a 2 p.m. start time.
