WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's soccer team nearly doubled its season goal total on Wednesday in blanking Chowan University, 4-0, at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.

The win was the second in a row for the Lady Bulldogs (2-3), and the loss was the third setback in a row for the Hawks (1-4).

Barton controlled play from the very beginning, earning two corner kicks in the first minute and a half and four in the first nine minutes.

The Lady Bulldogs made their offensive push pay dividends in the 11th minute, when a pair of seniors connected on Barton's first goal of the night. Tanya Garcia drove down the right sideline and crossed the ball to the far post, where Kelly Dolan touched home her first career goal past Chowan keeper Olivia Borer.

Barton thought it had added a second goal midway through the period, but the strike was waved off by one of nine offside calls whistled against the Lady Bulldogs on the evening.

Chowan produced its best chance of the night in the 17th minute when Christine Chubb worked around a Barton defender for an open look in the box, but BC keeper Haley Sauls recorded one of her two saves on the night to keep the Hawks off the board.

The two sides went to intermission with Barton still clinging to the 1-0 advantage, but that changed 6:29 into the second half after Chowan committed a foul inside the box. Barton freshman Amanda Kraft converted the penalty kick for her first collegiate goal, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 cushion.

Another freshman, Sarah Tinker, put the match away for the Lady Bulldogs with two goals in a span of three minutes midway through the period. In the 71st minute, the resident of North Prince George, Va., powered through two Chowan defenders to create a one-on-one chance against Borer, which she finished just inside the left post. Just 3:10 later, a Regan Collins pass from the right wing slipped through the dive attempt of the keeper, and Tinker was waiting on the other side near the far post.

Barton enjoyed a 12-5 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Borer collected four saves for the Hawks. Sauls (1-0) had both of Barton's saves in just over 76 minutes of work in net to earn her first decision of the year. Senior Allison Bell covered the rest of the match in goal for the Lady Bulldogs to share in the shutout.

BC will return to Conference Carolinas action on Saturday when it hosts North Greenville University in a 2 p.m. contest.
