CENTRAL, S.C. – The Barton College women's volleyball team lost for the first time in 13 matches on Friday night, falling to Southern Wesleyan University 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-22, 25-18) in Tysinger Gymnasium.
The Warriors improved to 13-10 overall and 11-4 in league play, while the Lady Bulldogs (18-8, 13-2) were still able to claim the North Division title after Belmont Abbey College's loss to Limestone College.
Southern Wesleyan took the first set of action with a score of 25-20 after leading from start to finish. However, the Lady Bulldogs battled back to tie the match at 1-1 following a 27-25 win in the second set of play. SWU led 10-5 early on in the set before BC was able to take a 14-13 lead following a service ace from redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane. Barton never trailed again in the set as a Warrior service error gave Barton the win.
The Warriors took control early in the third set, leading to a three-point win. Barton had the momentum to begin the fourth set of play, leading 6-3 after a kill from sophomore Angelica Acevedo. Unfortunately, a kill from Southern Wesleyan's Paige O'Connor sealed the decision.
Sophomore Hayley Marshburn had 13 kills to lead three Lady Bulldogs with double-digit kills. Junior Courtney Wiseman had 12 kills and four blocks to go with a .333 hitting percentage, while senior Mariana Kedzia finished with 11 kills. Bane led all players with 19 digs on defense, as Acevedo totaled 43 assists and 11 digs.
Barton will look to rebound with a match against North Greenville University tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C.
