WILSON, N.C. – In just over an hour's time, the Barton women's volleyball team defeated University of Mount Olive 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-18) in the team's annual 'Dig Pink' match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness on Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs remained atop the Conference Carolinas standings with their 10th consecutive win, improving their record to 10-1 in the league and 15-7 overall. Mount Olive fell to 10-14 and 5-7 in the conference with the loss.
In the first set of play, the two sides played to 10 total ties on the scoreboard with UMO even taking a 20-19 lead after a Barton attack error. However, BC scored five of the final six points in the set, ending on a kill by sophomore Hayley Marshburn to give her team a 1-0 lead in the match.
Barton opened the second set of play on a 7-2 run, building the lead to a 22-12 advantage following a double block by Marshburn and junior Courtney Wiseman. A kill from senior Kaitlyn Micol ended the set in the Lady Bulldogs' favor at 25-15 extending its lead to a 2-0 edge.
After scoring the opening three points of the third set, BC never trailed and cruised to a 25-18 victory to seal the win.
Marshburn led all player with 15 kills to go along with 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Micol followed with nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage, while sophomore Allie Cullens had eight kills of her own and a .400 hitting mark.
Sophomore setter Angelica Acevedo tallied a match-high 37 assists as redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane had 17 digs on defense.
The Bulldogs continue their four-game homestand with a match against King University on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
