PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Barton College women's volleyball team extended its current winning streak to nine games with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-19) win over non-conference opponent UNC Pembroke on Tuesday afternoon.
The win was Barton's second of the season over the Braves after BC earned a 3-1 win on Sept. 10 in the Francis Marion University Invitational. The win moved the Lady Bulldogs to 14-7 overall, while Pembroke fell to 2-20.
Barton hit a season-high .337 as a team, including a .372 mark in the third and final set to seal the match win. Sophomore Allie Cullens led the way, hitting .625 with 10 kills and no attack errors.
Senior Mariana Kedzia led all players with 11 kills, while reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week Hayley Marshburn finished with eight. Junior Courtney Wiseman had six kills and a .455 hitting percentage, as redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane and senior Laura Peed totaled 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
After Pembroke scored the first point of the match, Barton never trailed in the opening set as kills from Cullens and Wiseman along with a service ace by Bane ended the set with BC ahead by eight points.
The second saw the Braves score first again, but the Lady Bulldogs closed the set on a 13-3 run, including the final four points, to take a 2-0 lead. BC and UNCP played close in the final set, tying the score at 11-11 after a kill from Aquia Jones. However, the Royal Blue and White responded with three consecutive points to open up a three-point lead and hold on to end the match.
Barton hosts Saint Augustine's University on Thursday, Oct. 20 in the team's next match at 7 p.m. in Wilson Gym.
