WILSON, N.C. – Sophomore transfer Stephanie Pingyin totaled 17 kills and 15 digs for her first double-double in Royal Blue and White as the Barton College women's volleyball team defeated Chowan University 3-0 in straight sets on Wednesday night.
Playing in Wilson Gymnasium for the first time of 2015, the Lady Bulldogs (2-3) were in control early on in the 25-14, 28-26, 25-20 victory.
Barton hit .364 as a team in the opening set of play, racing out to an early 5-1 lead. The advantage grew to as large as 20-10 late in the set as Chowan (1-3) was unable to overcome the large deficit.
The Hawks and Lady Bulldogs played to 15 total ties in the second set of action as Chowan opened with a 4-1 run for an early lead. Three straight kills from Pingyin evened the score at 4-4 before a 6-1 run by the Hawks gave the visiting team a sizeable 10-5 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to battle, evening the score once again at 11-11 as neither team was able to gain an advantage of more than two points until Chowan led 23-19 late. A 9-3 run by the Lady Bulldogs, including four kills from junior Mariana Kedzia, sealed the 28-26 victory and gave Barton a 2-0 lead in the match.
Barton began the third set of play with five straight points and controlled the final set from start to finish leading to the straight-set victory.
In addition to Pingyin's double-double performance, sophomore Laura Peed led all players with 16 digs and freshman Angelica Acevedo chipped in a match-high 28 kills. Eight different Lady Bulldogs recorded a kills in the team's second consecutive win as Barton hit .158 as a team compared to a -.019 mark by the Hawks.
Barton will be on the road again this weekend, competing in the Lee University Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn. on Friday and Saturday.
