Women's volleyball earns first win of 2015 with split at Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Barton College women's volleyball team claimed its first victory of the 2015 season with a 3-2 triumph over University of West Alabama on Saturday in the Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational hosted by Lynn University.

Barry University earned a straight-set victory over the Lady Bulldogs in a morning matchup before Barton was able to defeat West Alabama in a five-set match.

Barry registered double-digit kills in each set as the Buccaneers earned a 25-21, 25-12, 25-16 straight-set victory over Barton in the first match of Saturday competition.

Barton sophomore transfer Stephanie Pingyin led all players with 14 kills in the match as Barton hit .116 as a team compared a .269 hitting percentage by Barry. Freshman Angelica Acevedo registered a match-high 21 assists as sophomore Laura Peed totaled a team-high 11 digs.

The Blazers took advantage of 11 Barton attack errors in the first set to gain an early lead before totaling 15 kills in each of the final two sets to secure the victory.

The Lady Bulldogs led early and often in the first set, building a lead as large as 18-13 before Barry closed with a 12-3 run for the one-set advantage. The Buccaneers controlled the second and third sets, building a 10-0 lead in the final set of the match before Barton was able to get on the scoreboard en route to the neutral-site win.

Barton took an early 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 victory in the first set, using a service ace from sophomore Courtney Wiseman to clinch the set win. The Lady Bulldogs never trailed in the set, leading by as much as an 18-6 tally before West Alabama battled back to force a tie at 22-22 late in the action but could not overcome the Barton momentum.

In the second set, Barton and West Alabama traded points in the early going before the Royal Blue and White pulled away with five straight points for a 9-4 lead. The Lady Bulldogs' lead grew as large as an eight-point edge as they cruised to a 25-22 victory in the second set of action.

West Alabama earned a 25-21 victory in the third set of play and followed with an identical 25-21 victory in the fourth to force a deciding fifth and final set of play.

The final set of was all Barton as the Lady Bulldogs built an early 6-1 lead and held on to their advantage to clinch the match with a 15-9 win.

Pingyin again led all players in kills with a total of 23 in the match, while junior Mariana Kedzia finished with 10 kills of her own. Wiseman totaled six service aces as Acevedo chipped in a match-high 37 assists. Peed totaled 18 kills in the winning effort.

Barton will be on the court again on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in the home opener against Chowan University at 7 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
