WILSON, N.C. – Facing its second South Atlantic Conference member of the week, the Barton men's soccer team defeated Catawba College 2-1 on Saturday night in the home opener at the Barton Soccer Field.
The game became physical early on as a foul inside the box by a Catawba defender set up a penalty kick for Barton at the 8:40 mark of the first half. Junior transfer Rodrigo Neves stepped to the ball and buried the penalty shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Barton held the one-goal advantage throughout the remainder of the half, firing five shots in all, two on target.
However, the Indians tied the game up at 1-1 just over 15 minutes into the second half of action as Jack Pettett scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Jack Ragen in the 61st minute of the game.
As the clock turned to the 68th minute, freshman Tolly Beatson collected his first career goal to put Barton ahead 2-1 in the match. Freshman Daniel Gregory sent a ball down the right side to the foot of junior Alex David who sent a one-timer into the box for the assists.
Catawba outshot Barton 14-11 in the match as sophomore keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik picked up the victory with two saves.
Barton will take to the road for a mid-week matchup with Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
