WILSON, N.C. – The women's soccer teams from rivals Barton College and University of Mount Olive battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in their Conference Carolinas matchup Tuesday evening at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Barton (2-2-2, 1-1-2) scored its goal on a penalty kick by senior Emily Futral with 15 minutes left in the first half following a hand ball in the box.
Despite Mount Olive enjoying a 14-3 second-half advantage in shots, the Lady Bulldogs nearly made the lead stand up thanks to a career-high 13 saves from senior keeper Kelsey Rothwell.
However, with less than five minutes to go, the Trojans (3-3-1, 2-1-1) finally broke through when junior Alex Wetherholt finished off a cross from the left sideline that was set up by a missed shot.
Mount Olive enjoyed a 5-2 edge in shots in the two overtime periods, but Rothwell collected three of her saves in the extra frames to help preserve the tie.
The Trojans finished the night with a 27-12 advantage in total shots, including a 14-5 difference in shots on goal. All five shots on goal by the Lady Bulldogs were recorded by Futral, with four of them turned away by UMO keeper Stephanie McCoy.
Barton will begin a four-match road stretch on Saturday when it visits Central, S.C., for a 2 p.m. matchup with Southern Wesleyan University.
