Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Barton College women's volleyball team ran its win streak to three straight games with a victory over Emmanuel College before falling in straight sets to host Lee University in the Lee University Invitational on Friday night.
Barton 3, Emmanuel (Ga.) 1
The Lady Bulldogs hit .263 as a team, led by 28 kills and a .314 hitting performance from sophomore Stephanie Pingyin to down the Lions of Emmanuel College in Barton's first match of the day 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21.
The first set of play was a back-and-forth affair with neither team gaining much ground until Barton scored five unanswered points to build a 20-15 lead late. The Lions battled back to within one point until a service error sealed the Barton victory.
Barton's momentum carried into the second set as the team went ahead 5-3 before Emmanuel tied the game at five points apiece. The tie would be the first of nine in the set as a 7-0 run gave the Lions a 25-18 victory and tied the match at 1-1 overall.
In the third set of action, Emmanuel built a lead of 9-4, putting the Lady Bulldogs in an early hole. However, two kills each from Pingyin and freshman Hayley Marshburn as well as two errors by the Lions gave Barton a 10-9 lead midway through the set. Neither team was able to pull away from the other as Barton went ahead 2-1 with a 25-23 victory.
The Royal Blue and White handed Emmanuel its first loss of the season with a 25-21 victory in the fourth and final set, as Barton was able to overcome an 8-0 deficit to claim the win.
Sophomore Laura Peed led all players with a career-high 20 digs, while freshman Angelica Acevedo's season-high 41 assists also led all players. Junior Mariana Kedzia recorded her first double-double as a Bulldog, registering 11 kills and 12 digs of her own.
Lee 3, Barton 0
The second match of the day told a different story for the Lady Bulldogs as host Lee University defeated Barton in straight sets 25-15, 25-22, 27-25 on its home floor.
Lee controlled the first set essentially from start to finish en route to the 10-point victory. The second set saw Barton lead by as large a margin as 12-7 before Lee fought back to tie the set at 12-12 midway through. The two teams traded points through the end of the set with the home team coming out on top after holding off the charging Lady Bulldogs.
The two teams played to 11 total ties in the final set with Barton leading by as much as four points and Lee never holding an advantage of more than two points. However, two straight kills gave the Flames the set and the match victory.
Pingyin once again led all players in kills with 16 while also registering a double-double with 11 assists on the night. Freshman Alexandra Cullens turned in the best performance of her young career, totaling nine kills with a .643 hitting percentage to go along with two blocks in the middle. Marshburn had a strong defensive effort in her first start, recording a team-high 15 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will conclude the Lee University Invitational tomorrow beginning with a match against Union University at 9 a.m. followed by a noon showdown with Campbellsville University.
