WILSON, N.C. – Sophomore Karimah Dean scored the go-ahead layup with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Barton College women's basketball team earned its first league victory with a 68-63 win over Converse College in Wilson Gymnasium.
Dean, a transfer from Lenoir-Rhyne University, totaled nine points, six points and three steals in the victory. Fellow sophomore Tatyana Jackson made 5-of-6 free throw attempts in the final 23 seconds as she finished with 15 points and five assists.
Freshman Kianna Wynn recorded her third straight double-double and fourth overall with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while redshirt-sophomore Alex Kimble finished with 12 points and seven rebounds of her own. Junior Caila Carter totaled eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the field in 16 minutes off of the bench.
Converse's Erin Horne led all players with a career-high 18 points, while DahVielle Lucas and Paige Johnson each finished with 13 points for the Valkyries.
As a team, Barton (3-3, 1-1) held a 35-31 advantage in total rebounds and scored 28 points off of 19 Converse (1-2, 0-2) turnovers, However, the Valkyries shot 45.1 percent from the floor compared to a 39.7 percent shooting performance by the Lady Bulldogs in a game that saw nine ties and five lead changes.
Barton trailed early in the game as Converse held a 16-11 lead after the first quarter of play behind eight points from Horne. BC took a 24-22 lead into the halftime break after holding the Valkyries to just six points in the second quarter.
In the third quarter of play, Barton used six points from Jackson to extend its lead to a five-point advantage with just 10 minutes remaining in the game. BC and Converse played to four ties in the final quarter as Dean's layup and Jackson's late free throw sealed the win.
Barton hosts Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
