DUE WEST, S.C. – The top two teams in Conference Carolinas squared off on Saturday afternoon with Barton College falling to Erskine College 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-7) on the road.
Barton (13-10, 8-5) gained an early 6-4 lead in the first set before Erskine (18-5, 15-0) fought back to take a 9-8 lead. The Flying Fleet's lead grew to as large as a five-point advantage late as they secured the 25-20 set one win.
The second set saw Erskine continue its momentum until Barton tied the match at 7-7 on an Erskine attacking error. Barton built a 20-13 lead late in the set and cruised to the 25-19 victory to tie the match at 1-1. BC won the second set 25-22 thanks in large part to a 7-1 run midway through the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Erskine forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set before securing the match victory with a 15-7 win in the deciding set of play.
Junior Mariana Kedzia led all players with a season-high 19 kills while also collecting 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Fellow junior Kaitlyn Micol also totaled a season-high with 12 kills and 15 digs, as freshman Hayley Marshburn contributed 11 kills and a career-high 21 digs in the match.
Barton will travel to Mount Olive for a match on Tuesday, Nov. 3 beginning at 7 p.m.
