Barton, Lees-McRae battle to scoreless draw

Box Score

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Despite a 19-3 disadvantage in shot attempts over the final half of regulation and two overtime periods, the Barton College women's soccer team managed to leave Lees-McRae College on Monday with a scoreless tie in the two teams' Conference Carolinas matchup.

Barton's back line of Kelly Dolan, Nikki Helton, Rachel Krueger and Della Futral supported keeper Kelsey Rothwell in keeping the Bobcats (4-8-1, 2-4-1) off the scoreboard. Rothwell posted 11 saves, her second-highest total of the season, in collecting her third shutout of the year.

The Lady Bulldogs were also fortunate on at least two other occasions, as Emma McGovern's shot with 3:32 left in regulation bounced off the post and Molly Ames' attempt with 2:18 to go in the second overtime clanked off the crossbar.

Barton (5-5-3, 2-4-3) took seven of its 10 attempts in the first half, including the last three shots of the period. However, after Dolan's shot was saved by Lees-McRae keeper Alexis Feely on the first attempt of the second half, the Lady Bulldogs were outshot 11-0 over the rest of regulation.

The Lady Bulldogs had just one shot attempt in each overtime session, the first one on a header by Emily Futral off a corner kick by Lane Brooks in the 98th minute that was saved by Feely, and a shot by Brooks in the 104th minute that missed wide left.

The 10 shots taken by Barton matched the third-lowest total in a match this season, while the 24 given up matched the third-highest total allowed this year.

The tie left Barton percentage points ahead of Lees-McRae in the battle for the final Conference Carolinas Tournament slots. The Lady Bulldogs have two league matches remaining, beginning with a 1 p.m. Homecoming match this weekend against Emmanuel College.

Before that contest, however, Barton will play its fourth match in seven days when it hosts Chowan University in a non-conference match at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
