Box Score WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's volleyball team continued its recent hot streak with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) victory over Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Gymnasium.
Barton (10-8, 5-3) claimed its fifth straight win and fourth straight in league play by forcing the Bobcats to hit just .071 as a team while recording 45 digs and eight total blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs led 6-2 early in the first set of the day, building a lead as large as a 22-14 advantage before using a kill from junior Mariana Kedzia to end the set and take the 1-0 lead.
Lees-McRae (4-13, 3-5) responded by scoring the first five points in the second set as the Bobcats lead continue to grow to 16-7 midway through the frame. Barton head coach Jeff Lennox chose to insert freshman Hayley Marshburn, who had missed the previous three matches due to injury, into the lineup and the Lady Bulldog's fortunes changed.
The substitution sparked a 12-3 run for Barton to tie the set at 19-19 with momentum favoring the home team. BC ended the set on a 6-2 run as Marshburn secured the 25-21 win with back-to-back kills.
Barton once again built a 6-2 lead in the third set, stretching the advantage to an eight-point lead early on. The Bobcats battled back but could never get closer than a five-point deficit as sophomore Stephanie Pingyin ended the match with a kill for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Royal Blue and White hit .245 as team, led by Pingyin's 17 kills and .341 hitting percentage. Kedzia finished with eight kills and seven digs, while Marshburn and sophomore Courtney Wiseman each finished with six kills of their own.
Wiseman led all players with a .455 hitting percentage in the match, while she and freshman Alexandra Cullens each totaled four blocks. Freshman Angelica Acevedo totaled a match-high 34 assists, securing her second straight double with 10 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Oct. 16 when they host Belmont Abbey College at 7 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
