GAFFNEY, S.C.-Junior forward Archer Bane scored Barton College's lone goal in a 4-1 Conference Carolinas setback to No. 6 NSCAA/Continental Tire Southeast Region ranked Limestone College on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints used goals from four different players to remain unbeaten in league play as Limestone improved to 7-3-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the conference. The Bulldogs drop to 5-7-1 and 4-4-0.
The Saints did not need much time to find their groove on offense, striking for a quick 1-0 lead after sophomore forward Jorge Mackenna finished off Sam Orritt's cross from the right wing in the eighth minute. Limestone then added to its lead midway through the opening half when Orritt headed home his fourth goal of the season off a feed by junior forward Jack Bailey.
Holding onto a two-goal advantage coming out of the break, the Saints continued to build on their lead when junior defender Larry Mahon connected on a free kick from just outside of the penalty box in the 49th minute.
The Bulldogs then made it a 3-1 game at the 73:38-mark when Bane found the back of the net off a corner kick by freshman Daniel Alkmim.
Bane ranks fifth in the league with 15 points on the season and his five goals on the year ranks tied for eighth in the conference. Alkmim has two helpers.
Limestone would put the game away a few minutes later as freshman forward Benjamin Morande blasted the ball into the cage from the top right corner of the box. Sophomore midfielder Daniel Mohsen provided the assist on the play with a short pass from the right corner of the field, his first point of the year, as the Saints won in front of a large homecoming crowd for Limestone.
The Blue and Gold recorded a 24-7 advantage in shots taken but Barton held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Barton sophomore Dante De Luca, the league leader in goals and points, was held to just four shot attempts. Starting junior keeper Vasily Yakimkin tallied three saves.
Barton will look to bounce back at home on Wednesday when the Bulldogs entertain Pfeiffer University in a Conference Carolinas showdown at 7 p.m.
