Paul Shuey will begin his second season as women’sassistant soccer coach at Barton College in 2014-15.

In his first year with the program, Shuey helped direct the LadyBulldogs to a 14-5-1 campaign - the second-best season in schoolhistory - their first Conference Carolinas Tournament appearancesince 2008, and their first post-season win since 2005. That squadincluded four All-Conference selections, three All-Regionperformers and one NCAA Division II All-American. 

A native of Lima, Ohio, Shuey is best known for a stellarbaseball career that led him to 11 seasons as a relief pitcher inthe major leagues. In recent years, however, he has been heavilyinvolved in the greater Raleigh, N.C., area’s vibrant soccerscene.

Following his retirement from Major League Baseball in 2007,Shuey stayed connected to the sport by giving clinics and lessons,but he also began his involvement with soccer. He served asassistant coach for Wake Forest United from 2009 to 2012. In 2012,he developed a working relationship with former Bartonwomen’s head coach Chris Shaw while serving as an assistantwith CASL United.

Prior to his major league career, Shuey was an all-state playerat Millbrook High School in Raleigh. He attended the University ofNorth Carolina, where he earned Freshman All-American andAll-Atlantic Coast Conference recognition in 1990. He alsorepresented the United States in the 1991 Pan American Games.

Shuey was drafted in the first round – No.2 overall– of the 1992 Major League Draft by the Cleveland Indians. Hereached the majors by 1994, and was a part of Cleveland’sAmerican League Division Series playoff teams in 1996 and1998. 

Shuey pitched nearly nine seasons with the Indians before beingtraded to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2002 season. Heremained with the Dodgers until spring training for the 2004season, when an injury sidelined his career. He made a comebackattempt with the Baltimore Orioles in 2007, but retired onSeptember 5 of that season.

He was elected to the Kinston Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011 andthe Millbrook High School Hall of Fame in 2012.

Shuey currently resides in Wake Forest, N.C., with his wife,Julie, and three daughters: Morgan (17),Casey (15), and Kate(7).
