Charles Howard is beginning his fifth year as anassistant basketball coach at Barton but his 21st seasonoverall.
Howard's responsibilities with the Barton basketball programinclude recruiting, on-court coach, scouting and player skilldevelopment.
Howard began his coaching career at North Carolina A&T as agraduate assistant in 1989-90. He served in that capacity twoyears, before becoming a full-time assistant coach in 1992. He returned to Fike as an assistant coach for one season in1990-91. He was an assistant coach at the University of MarylandEastern Shore in 1999 and at Savannah State University 2001.
Howard has also been a head high school coach for 10 season at Southwest Edgecombe High School in Pinetops, N.C., from1993-1997 and Beddingfield High School in Wilson from 2002-2008. Heled Beddingfield to the North Carolina State play-offs four out ofthe six seasons during his tenure.
Howard is a Wilson native and he starred as a player at FikeHigh School under the late legendary coach Harvey Reid Jr., thewinningest coach in North Carolina High School Boys Basketballhistory. He was the leading scorer and rebounder on the 1984 Statechampionship team as a junior. Howard earned All-State, All-East,Conference Player of the Year, Area Player of the Year, Team MVPand selected to play in the North Carolina East/West All-Star gameas a senior.
Howard played collegiately at North Carolina A&T Universityunder another legend in Don Corbett, who was a winner of sevenconsecutive MEAC Tournament Championships earning an automatic NCAAbid from 1981-1988.
Howard was a member of two championship teams in 1987 and 1988.The 1988 team was undefeated and set a school and conference recordof 14-0 and an overall record of 24-3 losing to national powersGeorgia Tech and Syracuse.
Howard earned Freshman Player of the Year honors in his firstyear and the Six-Man Award as a sophomore. His career was cut shortby a serious knee injury as a junior.
Howard graduated from North Carolina A&T in 1989 with aBachelor of Science in Business Administration Management andearned a second Bachelor of Science in Business Education in1991.
Howard is married to Toni Washington Howard and they have threeboys in Emmanuel 20, Cameron 8 and Nijel 7.
