Benny Benton joined the Barton College athletics department in a full-time capacity as assistant sports information director in August of 2013, and moved into the role of sports information director in January of 2015.
Before becoming a staff member, Benton worked with Barton as a freelance statistician and writer covering select athletic events in 2009 and 2010, and again in 2012 and 2013.
As sports information director, he is responsible for oversight of the Department of Sports Information, which provides comprehensive coverage of Barton's 21 intercollegiate sports, and also serves as a liaison between Barton Athletics and media.
In addition to his duties at Barton, Benton currently sits on the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Southeast Regional Advisory Committee, and serves as tournament SID for the Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament.
From 2009 to 2016, Benton worked on the tournament staff at the NCAA Division II Baseball National Finals, where he wrote post-game releases and served as press room moderator.
Benton has nearly two decades of experience in sports journalism and media relations.
After graduating from Clemson University, Benton spent eight years as a reporter, columnist and editor at the Florence Morning News in Florence, S.C., where he received several Associated Press state awards for his work.
He moved to North Carolina in 1997 and took the role of sports information director at Mount Olive College, where he spent four years before joining the News Services staff at North Carolina State University.
In his six years with NC State, Benton primarily served as editor of the 7,200-circulation faculty/staff newspaper, The Bulletin, receiving a pair of awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for his work.
During his time there, he also produced news releases promoting the institution and served as a liaison to local, regional and national media outlets.
Between his periods of freelance work, Benton returned to Mount Olive for one season as assistant sports information director in 2010-11.
