Barton softball closes our regular season with doubleheader sweep of Chowan, 8-7 and 7-4

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (25-21, 11-13) swept Chowan (17-26, 8-14), 8-7 and 7-4, in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader and the regular season finale Wednesday afternoon at Jeffries Field.

Game One – Barton 8, Chowan 7
Barton senior designated player Gracelyn Massey (Princeton, N.C.) broke a seven-all tie with the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Bulldogs rallied from a 7-1 deficit to take the win.

Chowan scored all seven of its runs in the top of the second inning highlighted by a three-run fielding error from Barton but remained off the board the rest of the way.

Massey and freshman third baseman Ronnetta Gurley (Cove City, N.C.) both drove in a pair of runs while senior Kierstin Cooper (Nashville, N.C.) (12-11) allowed just two unearned runs in nearly six innings of relief to earn the win.

For Chowan, Makenzi Curry (Wilmington, N.C.) (3-3) finished with four hits but was tagged with the loss.

Game Two – Barton 7, Chowan 4
Barton junior shortstop MacKenzie Taylor (Mebane, N.C.) hit the game-winning, bases-clearing triple in a four-run second frame for the Bulldogs, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to finish off the sweep of the Hawks.

Taylor also scored twice while freshman Emily Bobo (Mount Ephraim, N.J.) improved to 6-4 on the year after earning the win in relief.  Bobo did not allow a hit in nearly three innings of work while striking out five batters.

Chowan's Calliope James (Virginia Beach, Va.) had an RBI single but Abby Rutledge (Middleburg, Fla.) fell to 4-5 after taking the loss.

Barton will next compete in the 2025 Conference Carolinas Softball Championship which takes place on Thursday, April 24, at Tyger River Park in Duncan, S.C.  Chowan, meanwhile, hosts Lees-McRae on Friday beginning at Noon in a league doubleheader.
