PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Barton softball team (20-20, 9-9) fell to UNC Pembroke (18-27, 9-9) twice on Friday, 2-1 and 11-2, on a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Braves Field.
Game One – UNC Pembroke 2, Barton 1
Trailing by a 1-0 score, the Braves scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning including the game-winning RBI triple courtesy of Summer Bullard (Pembroke, N.C.). The Braves' Jai Deese (Pembroke, N.C.) hit a solo home run earlier in the frame to tie the contest at one.
Barton junior second baseman
Mary Lindsey Harris (Robersonville, N.C.) drove in the Bulldogs' lone run with a triple in the fourth frame but senior
Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) (15-8) suffered the loss despite nine strikeouts on the day. Bullard (8-10) earned the complete game victory for the Braves.
Game Two – UNC Pembroke 11, Barton 2 (five innings)
Deese hit a grand slam while Chloe Locklear (Pembroke, N.C.) hit two home runs and both players finished with five runs batted in as the Braves run-ruled the Bulldogs to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Barton junior designated player
Gracelyn Massey (Princeton, N.C.) hit her team-leading 12th home run of the season and drove in both runs for the visitors despite the loss. UNC Pembroke's Kinsley Sheppard (Laurinburg, N.C.) (8-9) went the distance and earned the win while Barton freshman
Ali Bunch (Wilmington, N.C.) (2-4) took the loss.
Barton returns home to take on Chowan in a league doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while UNC Pembroke faces Mount Olive in a Noon doubleheader on Saturday in Mount Olive, N.C.
