MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (8-19, 7-11) wrapped up the regular season with a 71-57 victory over rival Mount Olive (8-18, 6-12) Wednesday evening in a Conference Carolinas contest at Kornegay Arena.
The Bulldogs, who avenged an earlier regular season loss to the Trojans, were led by freshman center
Nyla Powell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) with 23 points while senior guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 19 points as the Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak. Both players also pulled down 10 rebounds for double-doubles.
Mount Olive's Reagan Hune (Carmel, Ind.) led the home squad with 18 points but the Trojans shot just 37 percent (23-of-62) from the field in the setback.
Barton was clinging to a 42-40 advantage with just under five minutes remaining in the third period before putting together a 13-3 run which stretched the game into the final stanza and put the contest out of reach.
Barton held a 39-29 edge in rebounding while sophomore guard
Lauren Mingo (Clinton, Md.) finished with 15 points for the visitors. Walker also moved up to eighth place on the Bulldogs' all-time scoring list with 1,366 points.
Barton, the tenth seed in the 2024 Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Women's Championship, will face ninth-seeded Southern Wesleyan (10-16) in the opening round on Sunday, March 3, at 5:00 p.m., in Murfreesboro, N.C., on the campus of Chowan University.
