ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams were dominant in a home dual sweep of Chowan Saturday afternoon at the Harrison Family YMCA. The women's squad won by a 191-28 score while the men's team prevailed, 173-68.
On the women's side, a trio of Bulldogs – juniors
Riley Byers (Cumming, Ga.),
Emme Ham (Plantation, Fla.) and senior
Moira Euker (Fredericksburg, Va.) – all won a pair of individual events to lead Barton.
Byers placed first in the 50-yard (24.95) and 100-yard (55.49) freestyle events, Ham touched the line first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.84) and 200-yard individual medley (2:19.14) and Euker prevailed in the 100-yard (1:01.80) and 200-yard (2:15.17) backstroke events. In addition, Euker and Byers were part of the Bulldogs' first-place 200-yard medley (1:52.42) and 200-yard freestyle (1:41.35) relays.
In the men's competition, the Bulldogs also had three swimmers win two events: sophomore
David Szlobodnyik (Dunaujvaros, HUNGARY), freshman
Ethan Koekemoer (Waterfalls, SOUTH AFRICA) and junior
Ethan Maddrey (Sims, N.C.).
Szlobodnyik captured the 200-yard (1:56.42) and 100-yard (50.89) butterfly events, Koekemoer won the 100-yard (55.27) and 200-yard (2:03.79) backstroke events and Maddrey took home both the 500-yard (4:53.95) and 200-yard freestyle (1:45.91) events.
Koekemoer and Szlobodnyik were also part of the 200-yard medley (1:36.36) and 200-yard freestyle (1:26.86) relays on the men's side which took first place for Barton. In the end, the Bulldogs won a combined 25 of the 27 events.
The Barton swimming teams next host NCAA Division II-power Wingate on Saturday, January 28, at 1:00 p.m., back at the Harrison Family YMCA while Chowan hosts Chowan in a dual meet next Saturday, January 21, at 1:00 p.m., as well.
