WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (24-6, 11-4) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Chowan (8-27, 3-13) Sunday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Bulldogs run-ruled the Hawks, 10-2, in five innings while Chowan won the nightcap, 2-1, to force the doubleheader split.
Game One – Barton 10, Chowan 2 (five innings)
Barton junior third baseman
Lindsey Massengill (Pine Level, N.C.) finished with four hits and a pair of runs batted in while senior catcher
McCrae Knapp (Hertford, N.C.) added two RBI as the Bulldogs scored five runs in the sixth frame to run-rule the Hawks.
Massengill scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to end the contest. The Hawks committed four errors which led six Bulldog unearned runs.
Barton sophomore
Rilee Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) improved to 7-4 on the year with the complete game victory. Jones allowed just two runs to go along with seven strikeouts. Chowan's Bailey Wilcox (Port Republic, Md.) fell to 2-4 on the year after suffering the loss.
Game Two – Chowan 2, Barton 1
Chowan's Hannah Eden (Ocoee, Fla.) hit a solo home run in the first inning while Jesse Gentry (Mechanicsville, Va.) drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh as the Hawks stunned the Bulldogs to garner the split.
Knapp provided the only run of the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning – her first of the season – in the setback.
On the mound, Chowan's Megan Vincent (Boykins, Va.) (2-13) allowed just one run in the complete game victory while freshman
Miranda Holmes (Godwin, N.C.) fell to 9-2 after taking the loss for the Bulldogs. Holmes struck out eight batters in the losing effort.
Barton remains at home to take on Francis Marion in a league doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Chowan returns to Murfreesboro, N.C., to face Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
