SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (27-1), ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, advanced to the finals of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Championship with a 76-48 victory over Chowan (18-10) Saturday evening in the league tournament semifinals.
The top-seeded Bulldogs will take on seventh-seeded Francis Marion (18-12) in the finals on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Francis Marion defeated second-seeded Mount Olive (17-5), 96-84, in its semifinal contest on Saturday night.
Barton senior center
Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) was one of four Bulldogs to score in double figures, finishing with a game-high 20 points as the Bulldogs ran their winning streak to 21 games and advanced to the league tournament finals for the third straight year. Peterkin added 15 rebounds as the Bulldogs defeated the Hawks for the third time this season.
Senior forward
Jami Tham (Arlington, Va.) chipped in with 18 points for Barton, who took control early after jumping out to a 26-13 advantage at the end of one period of play and never looked back.
Barton limited Chowan to just 36 percent shooting (21-of-58) for the contest and just four points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs turned the game into a rout. The Hawks, the fourth seed in the tournament, were led by Destiny Robinson (Hampton, Va.) with 14 points.
