MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (20-1, 16-1) kept rolling with a 70-49 victory over rival Mount Olive (13-2, 11-2) in a Conference Carolinas showdown Tuesday night at Kornegay Arena.
The No. 12 Bulldogs were once again led by senior forward
Jami Tham (Arlington, Va.) and senior center
Shanika Peterkin (Arlington, Va.). Tham finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds while Peterkin also tallied a double-double – 20 points and 10 rebounds – as Barton won its 14th straight game. Tham now has five straight double-doubles.
Tham and Peterkin are the reigning league player and defensive players of the week, respectively. The duo helped limit the Trojans to just 34 percent shooting (21-of-61) and forced the home team into 17 turnovers on the evening.
Barton took control from the outset and moved into intermission with a 37-20 advantage. The Trojans couldn't get within 13 points the rest of the way.
Barton senior guard
Michelle Gainey (Rocky Mount, N.C.) also scored in double figures for the visitors, totaling 16 points on the night as the Bulldogs moved into sole possession of first place in the league standings. As a team, the Bulldogs hit 15-of-16 free throw attempts and improved to 11-0 away from home this season.
