No. 23 Barton women’s basketball ices Converse, 60-47, for fourth straight victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (10-1, 6-1), ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, won its fourth straight game with a 60-47 victory over Converse (3-9, 2-7) Saturday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas contest at Hannah Gymnasium.

Barton senior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.), the reigning league two-time player and defensive player of the year, finished with a game-high 19 points and a career-high 24 rebounds as the Bulldogs remained unbeaten away from home this year with a 5-0 mark.  Peterkin also blocked five shots in the triumph.

Sophomore guard Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 15 points as the Bulldogs used a 23-point third period to pull away from the Valkyries in the victory.  Senior guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) also scored in double figures for the visitors, totaling 11 points while dishing out four assists.

Converse, losers of five straight contests, was led by Sydney Wilson (Henderson, Tenn.) with 15 points but the home team shot just 32 percent (18-of-56) from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times in the setback.

Barton returns to the court to take on rival and undefeated Mount Olive on Tuesday in a league contest beginning at 5:00 p.m., in Mount Olive, N.C., while Converse travels to Belmont, N.C., to play Belmont Abbey Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m.
