SALISBURY, N.C. – The Barton College softball team (11-13) fell to Catawba (19-7) in a doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 16-4 on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field.
Game One – Catawba 12, Barton 4 (six innings)
Clinging to a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Indians plated seven runs to run-rule the Bulldogs. Carlee Brawley (Mooresville, N.C.) and Brittany Ireland (Dunn, N.C.) both hit two-run home runs to lead the home team as Catawba totaled 15 hits in the contest.
Barton sophomore designated hitter
Sloane Correa (Greenville, N.C.) finished with a pair of hits and two runs batted in despite the setback.
On the mound, Catawba's Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C.) improved to 8-3 on the year after securing the victory while Barton freshman
Rilee Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) fell to 8-4 after taking the loss.
Game Two – Catawba 16, Barton 4 (five innings)
The Indians scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back. Catawba put the contest away with an eight-run fourth inning capped off by a bases-clearing double by Allie Baker (Kannapolis, N.C.).
Catawba's Summer Howerton (Rolesville, N.C.) improved to 4-1 on the year after claiming the victory while sophomore
AnnaKate Gilchrist (Clayton, N.C.) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
Barton looks to bounce back on Saturday when the Bulldogs step back into Conference Carolinas play King (Tenn.) at home in a doubleheader beginning at Noon while Catawba faces Queens in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Charlotte, N.C.
