WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's basketball team (11-1) won the opening round of the 2021 Conference Carolinas Championship with an 82-58 triumph over Chowan (7-8) Tuesday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs, the second seed in the league tournament, received a season-high 26 points from junior guard
Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) while senior center
Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched her ninth double-double of the season – 17 points and 12 rebounds – in the win.
Barton held a 35-26 advantage at halftime before turning it on in the third quarter, scoring 26 points in the stanza and pushing their advantage to as many as 20 points at 55-35 with just under three minutes left on a lay-up by junior forward
Zanah Boyd (Cary, N.C.). Boyd finished with 14 points off the bench.
Chowan, who lost to Barton for the third time this year, was led by Aniah Patterson (Dover, Del.) with 13 points. The Bulldogs' defense forced the Hawks into 23 turnovers while the home team connected on 25-of-29 free throw attempts. Barton also won its 16th straight game at home dating back to last year.
Barton will next host sixth-seeded Mount Olive (7-6) in the league championship quarterfinals on Thursday beginning at 7:00 p.m., at Wilson Gymnasium. The Trojans upended third-seeded Emmanuel (Ga.) (13-4) by a 63-59 score in Royston, Ga.
