Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Barton women’s basketball holds off Emmanuel (Ga.), 62-60, for sixth straight victory

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Barton College women's basketball team (8-1, 8-1) ran its winning streak to six games with a 62-60 road victory over Emmanuel (Ga.) (7-3, 5-3) Sunday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas game at the Shaw Athletic Center.

Barton senior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied her seventh double-double of the season – 19 points and 13 rebounds – while junior forward Jami Tham-Morrobel (Arlington, Va.) added 18 points as the Bulldogs remained tied for first place in the league standings with Belmont Abbey.

Emmanuel was led by Breanna Locke (Flowery Branch, Ga.) with a game-high 23 points but the Lions shot just 31 percent (16-of-51) for the contest.  The Lions did, however, hit on 27-of-30 (90 percent) attempts from the charity stripe in the setback.

With the score tied at 60 with 18 seconds remaining, Barton junior guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) hit a pair of free throws to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.   A field goal attempt by Locke as time expired rimmed out and the Bulldogs were able to hold on.  Barton is also 19-2 in its last 21 contests dating back to last year.

Barton remains on the road to take on rival Mount Olive on Tuesday beginning at 5:00 p.m., in Mount Olive, N.C., while Emmanuel hosts Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., as well.
