MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams swept a dual meet from Chowan Saturday afternoon on the road at the Bynum Brown Aquatic Center. On the women's side, the Bulldogs won by a score of 122-54 while the men's squad bested the Hawks, 137-38. Barton won 18 of the combined 20 events including all 10 men's races.
In the women's competition, seniors
Kazia Patzer (Snellville, Ga.) and
Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA) led the way. Patzer won the 50-meter butterfly (30.67) and was part of the first-place 200-meter medley (2:07.62) and 300-meter individual medley (3:37.68) relays while Cathers touched the line first in the 50-meter backstroke (31.11) and was on the legs of a pair of first-place relays: 800-meter freestyle (9:02.70) and 500-meter freestyle (5:26.88).
In the men's race, the Bulldogs were led by freshman
Roman Martinez (Willow Spring, N.C.). Martinez won the 100-meter freestyle (55.53) and the 50-meter breaststroke (31.94) and earned victories as part of the 800-meter (8:14.99) and 500-meter (4:55.19) freestyle relays.
In addition, Barton junior
Alexander Hoscila (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) won the 50-meter freestyle (24.66) and was also part of a pair of winning relays: the 500-meter freestyle and the 200-meter medley (1:48.52). Junior
Jonathan York (Midlothian, Va.) also had a big day for the Bulldogs, winning the 50-meter butterfly (27.19) and taking first as part of the 500-meter and 800-meter freestyle relays.
Both Barton and Chowan will next compete in the 2021 Conference Carolinas Swimming Championships on Thursday, February 25, through Saturday, February 27, at the Kingsport Aquatic Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
